As the days shorten and the sun is lower in the sky and the landscape tilts into the shadows celebrate the sensuous possibilities of working in greyscale.

When we remove the reference to colour a heightened sense of texture, pattern, structure, and rhythm of the landscape comes to the fore. In this 3-day workshop I invite you to explore the drama of the approaching winter landscape with all things black and white.

Traditional drawing materials such as graphite, Indian ink and charcoal can become sensuous and painterly when layered and polished blurring the distinction between drawing and painting. When using in conjunction with water or mediums these same materials turn into beautiful, sensuous paints and stains which are remarkably versatile. During the first day I will lead you on a series of exercises aimed at exploring the capability of these materials

Create beautifully textured collaged paper grounds to work on. Experiment with different papers and surfaces. Innovate and experiment with humble materials and surfaces.

The second morning of the course includes a drawing trip to Sutton Bank and will involve a short walk on a flat accessible path of up to one mile from the Visitor Centre at Sutton Bank. We will spend approximately 2 hours here focussing on drawing and recording the expansive views across the Vale of York and the historic landmark of Hood Hill before returning to the studio to develop ideas from our sketches.

Plenty of time will be devoted to individual and group discussions together with slide shows and demonstrations of techniques.

Days run from 10am to 4pm.

Lunch and refreshments included, fresh from the Lund Studios kitchen.
